Just a quick reminder that if you want to enter our Charity Challenge, you’ll need to do so by the end of Friday evening! A small donation to one of our two chosen causes, Cancer Research UK or Ashanti Development, gets you plenty of match play and there’s both the Challenge trophy for the winner, and personalised lesson vouchers from Backgammon Masters Awarding Body for the two finalists. Our winner can also nominate their favourite cause for 2017… don’t delay, sign up here!

Position of the Week #8
St Albans seems to be a fertile source of positions at the moment! For our first cube action problem, we find Chris Purchase (Blue) storming along against Andrew Fotiadis (Black), although Andrew has managed to anchor with the Blue reinforcements still some way off in the distance. In the actual match the score was 1-1 up to 5, but to give you more to chew over I’ll ask you for:
- score 1-1 in a 3-point match, cube action?
- score 1-1 in a 5-point match, cube action?
- score 1-1 in a 7-point match, cube action?
Tournament report: Blackpool Imperial Cup 2016
Kevin Jones writes:
The 6th annual Blackpool Imperial Cup charity tournament was held at The Imperial Hotel, Blackpool. This year’s chosen charity was The Guide Dogs Association. Another sell-out event with 64 players from as far apart as Spain, Ireland, Isle of Man, and the four home nations competing for total prize funds/pools approaching £7000. It was a strong field comprising of a number of players with recent tournament successes, both domestic and international.
Position of the Week #7
This week’s one is fresh off the internet – having a FIBS League fixture against Christopher Osborne (COsborne) to play before getting down to write, this position kicked off a bit of a discussion. Don’t ask how I ended up with a 4-cube, nor how close I was to getting gammoned at the very end – I was just grateful not to fan at this point! Something’s got to give here. It would be great to come on Black’s 6 point, but then do you step out into the firing line, leave a second shot, or break up a board which might come in useful very soon? Or do you hang back on Black’s acepoint and risk not being able to get moving?
In the Members’ Area: The Blunderbuster
We’re delighted to be able to add an annotated match to our Recorded Matches collection – hopefully the first of many. Recorded matches are available to all UKBGF members, and as a taste of things to come this one is available for all to download here. Played at the recent BMAB tournament at East Midlands Airport, it has been analysed by eXtremeGammon with commentary provided by Rick Janowski, to whom we are very grateful. Also many thanks to Tim and Alastair for agreeing to be the first to feature in this series…
