Last year we were delighted to report on a successful year at the World Championships in Monte Carlo. We’ve heard today that 2017 has broken that record – with two titles won and three finalists so far:
Anna Clarke is Ladies World Champion 2017
Anna’s having a fantastic time in Monte Carlo, having (at the time of writing) reached the semi-finals of the undefeated bracket in the Advanced division – and a title in sight. She’s also won the Ladies Championship, with an all-British final against last year’s Ladies Champion, Cecilia Sparke. Fittingly, the final was a very closely fought match, going to DMP at the end. If only it were on the live stream!
David Broomfield is Junior World Champion
David went to Monte Carlo as the reigning Junior champion and has brought the title home again – for the third time. It’s a truly remarkable record and must augur well for a crack at the biggest title of all at some point?
Once again Lawrence Powell also had a cracking run in the main tournament, reaching the last 8 of the fighters. The fighters bracket starts its final round at 10pm tonight and the final will be played at 1pm tomorrow and as usual it promises to be a great contest. Two parallel live streams, sponsored by the USBGF, can be found here and here and there will be expert commentary – and no doubt a great atmosphere in the chat room. See you there!
Stop press: Jon Barnes and Eric McAlpine are Doubles Champions
I’ve just got off the live stream of the doubles final, where Jon and Eric beat Tim Line and former world championship finalist Sergey Erokhin 7-4 to take the World Championship Doubles title. A match full of swings, and most notably where Jon and Eric kept their nerve to stay back, pick up a very, very late shot, close it out and go on to win – turning an almost certain 2-4 deficit into a 4-0 lead. No pictures yet but keep an eye on our Facebook feed for some! Many congratulations to them all – three Brits in the final is probably a record? It’s been a fantastic year for the British contingent in Monte Carlo and they’ve done us all proud…
