The UKBGF Clubs Championship rotated around to the south-east this year and ended up in St Neots, Cambs. It’s not an area known for backgammon – just the one UKBGF member there, and so no “home” team to challenge for the title this time, but we still had a strong turnout of 19 five-player sides (almost twenty, but for a last-minute withdrawal). And after a very long day’s play, we have new champions: St Albans ‘A’
It’s time to start assembling your squads for the 2017 UK Clubs Championship! This unique one-day event pits teams of five players against each other in groups, similar to the World Cup, with the top teams in each group qualifying for the main knockout phase, and all other teams in a consolation knockout – guaranteeing at least five games for everyone. There are cash prizes for the winners and runners-up in both flights plus the Tutchings Trophy – named after Phil Tutchings, who was instrumental in creating and running the event in past years.
We’ve had good news about the Clubs Championship – the Grovesnor Casino in Didsbury have given us the extra space we need to increase the tournament from 16 teams, as it was last time, to 20. This means we will be accommodating all three teams who have been patiently sitting it out on our waiting list, and that means there’s one remaining space up for grabs. If you want to gather up a team of five to join us on Sunday August 14th and take a shot at coming home with the Tutchings Trophy, read on…
The UK Clubs Championship has been open for registration for a couple of months and now it’s time to allow club “B” teams to enter the fray. Places are very limited – just four remain from our original quota of sixteen – and will be allocated in order of payment so don’t delay! We will of course still welcome more “A” teams joining in but you’ll have to beat the rush. We are still in discussion with the Grosvenor Casino, Didsbury, Manchester about getting more space, taking us up to 20 teams, so later entries will go on a waiting list until we know for certain how many we can take.
We can now announce the dates for three headline events in 2016 – two at their established venues and one on the move.
The UK Open will move to May 20th-22nd 2016 and return to the Ricoh Arena, Coventry following its refit as a Hilton venue.
The London Open will be August 27th-29th 2016 at the iconic Hippodrome in Leicester Square.
And it’s the turn of the north to host the UK Clubs Championship, which will be on August 14th 2016 at the Grosvenor Casino, Didsbury, Manchester. They are familiar with backgammon having held qualifiers there last year, it’s a very accessible location by road and rail with many restaurants and bars on site. We hope you will enjoy it as a venue! If there is enough demand, an event will be held on the Saturday night for players who want to stay over the night before. Please let us know if this is of interest to you!
We have tried to provide the best possible offering, considering both the members’ survey earlier in the year and the venues available to us. More details of the individual events will be available nearer the time, and stay tuned as we complete the calendar for 2016 – it’s going to be a busy backgammoning year…
