The second West Yorkshire Open was played at Clayton, Bradford over the weekend 23rd to 25th March 2018 under the directorship of Steve Lee assisted by Steve Bibby, myself and a great team of helpers Jackie, Jenny and Deana. This year it was bigger and better with over 120 players including the World numbers one and two, Giants Mochy and Michy from Japan.
Steve Lee writes:
Following the huge success of the inaugural West Yorkshire Open earlier this year we are pleased to announce confirmation of next year’s event, which will take place from 23rd-25th March 2018.
This year we had the innovative North vs. South junior challenge as a side event. Next year we have secured the attendance of the world’s number one giant in backgammon, Masayuki Mochizuki, or “Mochy” as most know him and the world’s most eminent backgammon teacher Phil Simborg.
Stage two of the UK Tour 2017 and we head up to Bradford for the inaugural West Yorkshire Open. With a guaranteed £3700 prize pot thanks to a number of generous sponsors – including £2000 for the winner – places went pretty quickly, and ultimately 77 players in the main tournament did battle over the weekend. Sadly three places were no-shows, a bit disappointing considering the effort that went into creating a great weekend.
Saturday featured a very full day of play with six 7-point rounds in Swiss format to produce a final 28 for the Sunday’s knockout. Many congratulations to Main winner Kevin Jones, shown above (seated left) in the 11-point final with Steve Bibby.
