Tournament Entry Levels
Masters and Advanced Flights
In the Advanced flight a player may enter just for the challenge, without paying any entry fee. In that case only the registration fee would be payable and the player would not be eligible to win any part of the main prize pool. However, if this player is a Premium member of the UKBGF, he or she would still be eligible to receive an added prize from a sponsor, or other member bonus.
In the Masters flight, all players pay the basic entry fee of £100. In addition, players may enter any one of the optional side pools, or a maximum of two pools (but only those which are adjacent in value). These pools are discrete and not variable. This means for example that a share of the lowest value pool can only be won by a player who has entered that pool, and not by a player who has only entered a pool or pools of a higher value.
Masters and Advanced Flights
The Masters and Advanced Flights of the 2017 UK Open will use the same double elimination system as last year, as also used in the Monte Carlo World Championships. A player losing at any stage in the ‘Undefeated’ bracket will have a second chance in the progressive ‘Fighters’ Bracket before being eliminated from the Main. This means that the final will be between the winner of the Undefeated bracket and the winner of the Fighters bracket, who will play an 11-point match. If the Undefeated finalist wins this match, he or she will be Masters Champion. Otherwise there will now be two players with a single 11-point match loss, and they will play one further deciding 5-point match.
There is no Consolation bracket at this event; more play will be available for those players who lose two matches in the Main on the Saturday. All players with two Main losses should confirm that they will be present on the Sunday so that they can be entered into the draw for the Abbey Cup. There will be two separate Abbey Cup draws: Masters and Advanced.
Clocks will be used in the Masters Flight (‘Clock Obligation’). Please bring your own clock if you have one as we may not have sufficient. A clock may be used by mutual agreement in any Advanced match (‘Clock Option’), or may be imposed if necessary by a Tournament Director to facilitate the smooth running of the tournament.
Please note that the Tournament Directors reserve the right to amend the format if deemed necessary.
Beginners and Social players may attend any informal Beginners Workshops during the weekend. The following Social Swiss tournaments may also be entered:
Separate tournaments on Saturday and on Sunday; entries close at 11.30am on both days.
2-Point matches, Swiss format, 5 rounds, no cube
The winner of each tournament will receive a special UKBGF doubling cube made by Geoffrey Parker Games Ltd.
A player who receives a prize on Saturday will not be eligible to win another prize on Sunday.

Please note that, except for Beginners and Social players, registration closes at 10am on Saturday 2nd September 2017. Regardless of whether or not you have pre-registered, if you are a Masters or Advanced player you must have paid your registration fee, entry fee and any side pool money by this deadline or you will not be included in the tournament draw. If another player pays these fees on your behalf you must be present and ready to play by 11am to avoid penalty points. However if you cut things this fine you will miss the pre-tournament announcements, and the draw. Players are strongly recommended to arrive on the Friday and pay all fees then, to avoid any mishaps.
The provisional schedule is as follows. The UKBGF tournament committee reserves the right to make changes to the program. Notice of any amendments or updates will be posted on the blog, and on the UKBGF Facebook page, so please follow these.
