Who were the world’s Backgammon Giants in 2015?
Every two years, Yamin Yamin from Illinois surveys the Championship-level players and tournament directors around the world. He asks one question: rank the best players in the world, based on their active involvement with backgammon and their performance over the last two years. Not just based on a big tournament win or a high score on a rating system, the Giants are the players who have built up impressive reputations and are the most respected by their fellow competitors. The 32 players who receive the most votes will be honoured with special awards and trophies at major tournaments on the international circuit, such as the U.S. Open in April and the Chicago Open in May. And UK names have been notable by their absence in past years – we have only ever had two Giants in past lists – and never reached the top 32. It’s time to put that right; we have some very deserving candidates! Indeed, the ballot itself lists a wide variety of possible names for consideration and fourteen of our best feature on it.
To be eligible to vote for the Top 32, you must be an Open / Championship-level player, or a tournament director or organiser at the regional, national or international level. (If you’re not totally sure you qualify, then vote anyway – it won’t harm anyone’s chances) You can download a ballot form here and they must be mailed back to Yamin to arrive by the 31st January 2016 at the very latest. Please take some time to vote if you can; it’s only by having a wide cross-section of the playing community taking part that we’ll get a fair outcome. We will bring you the results when they are announced!
