It was at the start of the year that I took over from Tim Cross as the UK online team captain. These were considerable boots to fill given he had just helped steer the squad of himself, Seb Wilkinson, Gaz Owen, Leo Waters and myself to the title of EBIF online team champions in 2017.

Announcing: the 2018 Online Charity Challenge
It’s back! We’re now accepting registrations for the 2018 Charity Challenge, which this year will be supporting the Alzheimer’s Society, selected by this year’s winner Simon Morecroft.
In 2017 Gaz Owen nominated Mind, the mental health charity, to be the beneficiaries, and we were delighted to raise over £600. We’re hoping to do even better this year!
This year’s tournament is the same as last year, a World Cup style format with round-robin groups playing 7-pointers leading to a final knockout, and once again you can sign up for more than one entry if you really want plenty of games. Non-members are more than welcome to join in. All the round robins will kick off on 11th November and run until 31st January. Please make sure you register in time, and please don’t forget to include either your name or your Gridgammon nickname with your donation – we still have one anonymous donor who we’ve never managed to thank! The knockout will then run with 11pt rounds every two weeks until we reach the 15pt final – we’ll let you know when the final is arranged so that you can come and watch.
The Alzheimer’s Society are involved in cutting edge research into dementia care, causes, cure and prevention; in campaigning to raise awareness of the condition and helping suthose affected live without fear or prejudice, and providing information, care and support to people with dementia and their families, friends and carers, and helping them live active and independent lives. It’s a condition that directly affects 1 in 10 of people over 65, as well as everyone around them..
You can find full details of the tournament here, and you can see how much we’re raising towards our target of £700 over at JustGiving. Please do come and play, it’s for a great cause and we can make a real difference!

Backgammon and Local History in Coventry!
Phil Tutchings writes:
I have recently launched a small venture in Coventry mostly geared around local history – I shall be offering guided tours, talks, publications, research etc. As part of this enterprise I have decided to offer some one day backgammon tournaments which will be complemented by short walking tours and historical talks. They will be held in the historic setting of Coventry Priory Visitors Centre – site of English parliaments, Viking invaders, many royal visits and Coventry’s first cathedral – destroyed under Henry VIII.
