Earlier this year, helped by an influx of new members attracted by the creation of the UKBGF Online League and Cup, we invested in the further development of Backgammon Hub – a free platform to run online events created by one of our members, Alfie Kirkpatrick. During the pandemic, several clubs, including Ealing and East Kent, have been running tournaments on “The Hub”, and we are now delighted to promote our inaugural event on this platform, hosted by Andrew and David at Backgammonlondon.
Please note that this event is being presented exclusively to UKBGF members, with free entry and prizes courtesy of the UKBGF.
All matches and results will be self-contained on Backgammon Hub. We are hoping that this is the way forward to a clear and simple formula for online events, and we welcome you all to join us!
VENUE / REGISTRATION:
Please note you MUST register directly on the Hub where all matches will be played, and tournament information will be available.
TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS: Alfie Kirkpatrick, Andrew Selby, and David Potter. For all queries, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
TOURNAMENT DATES AND TIMES
Saturday 27th November:
4-player groups, randomly drawn, playing 3 x 11-point matches (round robin).
Pre-set round times: 10.30am – 12.30pm – 2:30pm.
Sunday 28th November:
32 qualifiers play in a 9-point (MAIN) knockout, commencing at 10.30 am.
96 non-qualifiers play in a 5-point (CONSOLATION) knockout commencing at 10.30am.
All matches will commence on the Saturday at the pre-set times, with a 15-minute grace period within which to check in to every match. There will be no exceptions or extensions if you miss this window, as the site creates a natural “forfeit” for the guilty player once the 15 minutes are up!
On the Sunday, as there are more rounds and we want to keep play moving, matches will start as soon as two players have won their previous round matches. Once the match starts, both players will then have 15 minutes grace to check in or the player who has not done so will be eliminated. Notifications are provided by the site, but it is the sole responsibility of both players to keep an eye on their screens – and the rounds may come thick and fast, particularly in the Consolation!
David, Alfie, and I will be constantly accessible during the event to answer any questions, and the platform has a live chat feature which you can use to ask for help… no WhatsApp or emails please!
Note that there will be fixed clock settings of 60 seconds per point and 10 seconds per move, and pip counts will be visible.
Before the tournament, and if you haven’t yet tried Backgammon Hub, we strongly recommend that you sign up (do it now – it’s free!) and arrange a practice match there with a friend.
We are confident that this introduction to The Hub will provide members with a simple, user-friendly, self-contained platform and great playing environment, and for 2022 we have plans for some exciting events to satisfy those with an appetite for online play.
