It is with great sadness and shock that the UKBGF learned of the recent passing away of Wayne Felton.
A brief overview of the methodology of the EUBGF/WBGF Backgammon World Rankings
The relatively recently formed Backgammon World Rankings (BWR) from the EUBGF/WBGF was developed for the purposes of formulating a system to house the results of virtually all tournaments globally to produce an ongoing individual rankings list.
The current version of the Rules which the UKBGF initially developed and updated in September 2015 was then adopted by the EUBGF and subsequently by the WBGF (World Backgammon Federation). They are therefore due a further tidying up update of various relatively minor amendments.
Some time back, the UKBGF Rules sub-committee spent quite a lot of time reviewing and considering the Rules amendment suggestions it had received since the currently existing Rules version was finalised. Six clarification amendments were agreed upon and were due to be considered further by the EUBGF for further implementation across all member nation federations.
Since that time however, further discussions began to take place and are currently ongoing with more federations outside Europe, most notably the USBGF, with the aim of achieving a unified globally accepted set of Rules.
Simultaneously, the EUBGF has started off the process of evolving into the World Backgammon Federation (WBGF) in order to, amongst other things, unify the game of backgammon generally.
In light of these developments, the implementation of a further set of amendments at this time isn’t felt to be helpful in achieving the global aims.
Having said the above, the clarification amendments previously agreed upon by the UKBGF Rules sub-committee will not be discarded but will be put forward once the global position becomes clearer and in fact will be supplemented by further suggestions that have been received directly by the UKBGF/EUBGF/WBGF in the interim.
We will keep you further informed about the global developments at this very exciting time for backgammon at the international level.
For the avoidance of doubt, please note that the WBGF is a different organisation to the WBF.
We are extremely pleased and excited to report that Akiko Yazawa, the 2014 World Champion from Japan, will be attending the 2018 UK Open!
As a very special additional part of the event therefore, on the evening of Friday 31st August, Akiko will be the guest of honour at a three course meal for twelve UKBGF members.
