‘A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…’, no wait, that is something entirely different. This is backgammon, in a nearby London borough, on the 18th April 2020! However, I have no doubt that similar drama awaits, roll the opening sequence… Episode 1 – Ealing: A New UKBGF Intermediate Tour event.
Backgammon in Ealing (BGiE) are delighted to host a 1-day 32-player straight knockout tournament, with progressive consolation, that is officially on the UKBGF Intermediate Tour. This means that not only can we offer a great day out (see our recent Winter Tournament report), with plenty of backgammon and enviable cash prizes, but also another chance for UKBGF members to gain Tour points and be in with a chance to win and land a place in the Tour Winners’ Invitational in 2021.
We welcome all players, from up and down the country. You don’t need to be a UKBGF member to enter (although you must be a member to score Tour points). Our only caveat is that you are eligible in terms of UKBGF rating. The UKBGF Tour pages will be updated with the necessary information in due course, but your Tournament eligibility rating is expected to be 1600 or less, based on the average of three ratings snapshots for each player, taken at the end of October, November and December 2019. Players not listed in the ratings will count as having a rating of 1500.
Registration this year will be £15 getting you breakfast, buffet lunch, and tea/coffee, as well as access to a staffed bar (you will still have to buy the drinks though!). Entry is a further £25, 100% returned as prizes to the winners and runners-up in the main knockout and consolation. There will also be a separate last chance which you can enter on the day.
Tournament Directors are John McNeill and Peter Bennet. Match lengths in the main will be 9 points throughout with an 11 point final, time permitting. The consolation will be 5 points throughout with a 7 point final, time permitting. The last chance will be 3 points throughout. To ensure smooth running of the event, the tournament will be clock preference, and will be run using UKBGF rules. Those unfamiliar with using a clock…. don’t be put off, you have plenty of time and there will be plenty of staff and players on the day to show you how it works. However, we would encourage you to get some practice using a clock during a match before the big day.
Doors to the Ealing Bowls Club, at Craven Road, Ealing, London, W5 2UA, will open at 9:30am so you can grab your breakfast roll in time for the random draw at 10:45 am. Play will begin at 11am. Penalty points will be applied for latecomers!
Regarding hotels, should you wish to stay the night before or after the tournament, there are several no-frills hotels very close by; Ibis, Travelodge, Premier Inn etc. Otherwise London is your oyster! Wherever you stay, all we would suggest is to book early to get the best rates.
Finally, pre-registration is a must!
To avoid missing out please email John McNeill [firstname.lastname@example.org] as soon as you can to reserve your place.
