It’s widely known that being in possession of the cube is an advantage. But just how much is that advantage worth? Is it enough to get an edge over the No. 1 Backgammon Giant in the world? And if you knew you had it to yourself from the start, would it change your strategy?
In a few days time these questions may be settled. Following the US Open in Las Vegas, at 9pm London time on Monday 20th April, Phil Simborg (prolific author, teacher and lecturer) will battle it out with Mochy (world #1) over 30 money games. The twist? Phil starts each game holding the cube on 2, in order to see who will get the better of the deal.
We can all get to watch and pick up expert insights throughout this unique match as it’s being streamed worldwide at www.twitch.tv/backgammontv . Live commentary will be provided by giants Falafel and Carter Mattig, the games will be transcribed and both the players and eXtremeGammon will also be passing comment from time to time.
If you’re viewing, the players have asked for $5 voluntary donations towards Mochy’s Under25 group that offers lessons, competitions and prizes to children in Japan. The Geoffrey Parker board being used will be sold in aid of the group after the event, and there are already other very generous sponsorships in place. Please do tune in – it promises to be a fascinating evening and will support a very good cause!
