Our second Charity Challenge has finally reached its end and we’re delighted to announce that Simon Morecroft is this year’s champion. The trophies are wrapped up in bubblewrap ready to go to the London Open in a couple of weeks to be presented -somewhat unusual for a TD to start off being on the receiving end…
As in 2016, one could win multiple qualifying group stages to reach the last 32 and thereby earn byes, and Simon repeated Gaz Owen’s feat of getting three knockout places (making life somewhat tricky for the draw!). He also had a very difficult route to the final, beating Jon Barnes twice, Jesper Carlsson and holder Gaz Owen in the semis before a hard-fought final against Tad Collins. The final score was 15-10, with Simon having the edge in both PR and luck along the way, and it was a thoroughly good match to watch. You can see the full final draw here.
Of course the other winners were Bristol Mind, Gaz’s nominated charity, and we were really pleased to smash our fundraising target, as you can see above! The thank-you belongs to all our players and anonymous supporters who chipped in to make a difference.
The donations that Bristol Mind receives allow us to continue to advance with our mission to raise awareness, reduce stigma and promote positive emotional wellbeing. Through our Training, Counselling, Mindline and Advocacy projects we hope to educate, support and encourage better understanding of mental health conditions.
We’ll leave Simon to ponder the choice of charity for 2018, and the Charity Challenge will return this autumn – hopefully even bigger and better!
