Once again, it’s time for you to start assembling your squads for the UK Clubs Championship! This unique one-day event pits club teams of five players against each other in groups, similar to the World Cup, with the top teams in each group qualifying for the main knockout phase, and all other teams in a consolation knockout – guaranteeing at least five games for everyone.
Twenty teams of five descended on Worcester last weekend to fight it out for the title of Champion Club – and for the first time in its seven year history, the Tutchings Trophy headed north of the Watford Gap as the North West League team of Brian Lever, Rachel Rhodes, Mark Calderbank, John Wright and Jonathan Wilkinson defeated a lot of tough opposition to claim the title.
The UKBGF Clubs Championship rotated around to the south-east this year and ended up in St Neots, Cambs. It’s not an area known for backgammon – just the one UKBGF member there, and so no “home” team to challenge for the title this time, but we still had a strong turnout of 19 five-player sides (almost twenty, but for a last-minute withdrawal). And after a very long day’s play, we have new champions: St Albans ‘A’

There are cash prizes for the winners and runners-up in both flights plus the Tutchings Trophy – named after Phil Tutchings, who was instrumental in creating and running the event in past years.
We’ve had good news about the Clubs Championship – the Grovesnor Casino in Didsbury have given us the extra space we need to increase the tournament from 16 teams, as it was last time, to 20. This means we will be accommodating all three teams who have been patiently sitting it out on our waiting list, and that means there’s one remaining space up for grabs.
