The UKBGF is delighted to announce the launch of a new UK-based backgammon proficiency centre, Backgammon Workshop (BGWS) whose website has just gone live.
Launched today, Backgammon Workshop, or BGWS, is a tuition service which has been created by two top UK professional players and teachers, Julian Fetterlein and Sebastian Wilkinson; soon to be joined by Gaz Owen. In addition to numerous tournament successes of their own, these three instructors have individually helped many others to attain higher levels of backgammon understanding and achievement. Now they are pooling their resources to create a new force in British Backgammon, with the backing of the UKBGF as well as Geoffrey Parker Games (click here to visit their website), who are generously providing boards for both training purposes and prizes.
Julian (Jooles) Fetterlein is widely recognized as the UK’s best backgammon theoretician and teacher and has been playing for over 30 years. He is a Backgammon Masters Awarding Body (BMAB) Grandmaster and has appeared several times on the list of World Backgammon Giants. Julian has notched up many notable tournament victories and is rated the No.1 UK player on the BMAB ranking list. Many of Julian’s students have gone on to achieve remarkable successes in both UK and overseas tournaments.
Sebastian (Seb) Wilkinson has been playing and teaching backgammon full time for the last two years. He has represented the UK in online and live international tournaments and in 2016 was a member of the “World Cup” winning team in Georgia. Sebastian has been ranked the No.1 player in the UK for much of the last two years on the UKBGF rating list and won the UK tour in 2016, taking the top spot in both the Bristol and Manchester Open tournaments. With doubles partner Jacek Wojciechowski, his first major title was the 2014 Doubles World Championship in Monte Carlo.
Gareth (Gaz) Owen graduated in Pure and Applied Mathematics with honours from Exeter University in 2002. He is a BMAB Grandmaster and has been a top UK player for many years, winning many tournaments and league titles in Bristol – his local club. His most prestigious international win was the 2015 Merit Park Open in Cyprus. Gaz was also a finalist in the Consolation of the World Championships in Monte Carlo in 2013.
BGWS offers a range of services and learning materials, some of which will be available completely free to UKBGF members. To quote from the BGWS website: “With personalised lessons, easy to understand conceptual ideas and courses covering every aspect of the game designed to meet your specific requirements, we are confident you will find what you need to take your game to the next level.”
The UKBGF is giving its full backing to BGWS, and the two organisations will work closely together to help grow the game of backgammon in the UK and encourage players to improve their backgammon skills. We are also delighted to announce the following new member benefit:
All current members of the UKBGF will enjoy a 10% discount off the cost of BGWS tuition services (excluding video lessons) – and that’s on top of other offers and discounts obtainable via the BGWS website. Here you will find the full range of services, including private lessons, commentated matches, match reviews, video lessons and more. You will also be able to read testimonials from former students. These are players who have have fulfilled their ambitions following personal tuition from BGWS teachers, tailored to their individual needs, thereby enabling them to reach their full potential. One such testimonial, from Tim Line, reads as follows:
“As a founder member of the UKBGF, I was entitled to a series of free lessons from one of the Top UK Players. I was extremely fortunate to get Seb. His ability to give clear, concise and powerful information immediately improved my understanding of the game and things that I had been doing wrong for many years were corrected. Learning can often feel like a chore at the best of times but I discovered it can be thoroughly enjoyable when delivered in a succinct and professional way. I will certainly be paying for further lessons.”
Backgammon Workshop told us:
“We are excited by the support and cooperation offered by the UKBGF which will make our Backgammon Workshop material and services available to a much wider audience.
“We look forward to providing benefits to UKBGF members of all abilities and fulfilling their backgammon aspirations with the joy of tournament success.
“In 2016 UK players won the World Team Championship, the Women’s World Championship and the Junior World Championship. Together we hope to build on this success and make the UK the preeminent force in world backgammon.”
Both Julian Fetterlein and Sebastian Wilkinson will be attending the UK Open at Coombe Abbey in September and both will be conducting seminars, the details of which will be announced in due course. Julian’s seminars at the 2015 and 2016 UK Opens were extremely well received and the videos of these are available to Premium UKBGF members here in the members area. As in previous years, UKBGF members will be eligible to attend the 2017 UK Open seminars free of charge and all players will be able to find out more about BGWS at this event.
Backgammon Workshop tuition services are bookable through their website, and UKBGF members will need to input a password in order to claim the 10% discount.
