The UKBGF Board are delighted to announce that they have appointed Tim Cross to be both online team captain, and live team captain for any team representing the UKBGF in international events. This appointment will be for two years, until October 2017, and is in recognition of Tim’s excellent efforts captaining Team UK in Budapest.
The principal live event is of course the EUBGF European Team Championships, to be held next in Copenhagen in September 2016. As the number of member federations grows, there are likely to be more events in future. The captain’s role does not only require being a very strong player, it also involves devising and implementing a fair and transparent selection process so that we select the strongest possible teams, and managing the team during the events.
Thank you all so much for trusting me with this role. I can assure you all that I will put every effort to ensure that the UK teams represent both UK Backgammon and the UKBGF board in the best possible light. Whilst I am writing to the board I want you all to know about the support Raj [Jansari] has given me since I started, especially in the really tough times in Budapest. The team were obviously successful socially in Budapest but we should put every effort into making the team successful backgammon-wise in Copenhagen as I cannot stress how seriously other countries take this tournament. I am very fortunate to have so much talent at my disposal.
The process for selecting the team for Copenhagen 2016 will begin around the new year and will conclude in plenty of time to make travel arrangements; you’ll hear about it here in due course and we would encourage people to put their names forward – a big pool of players to pick from will make Tim’s job easier!
