Guest of Honour
Meet the 2014 – and now also the 2018! – World Champion Akiko Yazawa at this year’s UK Open! Details on the blog.
Venue and Hotel
Following the success of the fourth UK Open at Coombe Abbey in September 2017, we are returning to this stunning venue this year. Situated approximately six miles east of Coventry city centre, Coombe Abbey was originally a Cistercian abbey dating back to the 12th century and is set in 500 acres of parkland.
Our allocation of rooms at Coombe Abbey sold out in June, but see the Venue and Hotel page for details and also for other suggested hotels in the vicinity. Should a room at Coombe Abbey become available we will post this on the UK Open Facebook Event and if you have to cancel your existing room booking please let us know first.
PLEASE NOTE: London Euston Station will be closed on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd September. See the Venue and Hotel page for more details.
Format and Schedule
The Masters flight will revert this year to a traditional format of Main with progressive Consolation, followed by a Last Chance (called the ‘Abbey Cup’) on Sunday.
UPDATE 5TH JULY 2018: The Advanced flight will be a qualifying Swiss on day 1, followed by Main and Consolation knockouts on day 2 (not a pure Swiss format as originally advertised).
Satellites and 1-pointers will begin the event on the afternoon of Friday 31st August, including the Paul Gilbertson Memorial Freeroll, generously sponsored by Bone Club, followed by the UKBGF Annual General Meeting at 5pm. A private dinner for 12 UKBGF members with Akiko as Guest of Honour will commence at 6.15pm on Friday, followed by the Warm Up and Super Jackpot at 8.15pm. The main tournaments will start on Saturday morning and are expected to finish by early evening on Sunday, 2nd September. Before play resumes on Sunday morning Julian Fetterlein will present his new seminar entitled “The Three State Solution” which promises to be fun, entertaining and educational, and this is followed by presentations of the British Backgammon Awards.
See the Format and Schedule page for more details.
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to pre-register stating whether you wish to enter the Masters or Advanced flight. See the Registration page for more information, including eligibility to play in a particular flight. Masters players: please also tell us if you want to play in the Super Jackpot, starting Friday evening, which will be limited to 32 players. In most cases no pre-payment is required, but please remember to book your hotel accommodation.
