We have secured an incredible value package deal for players…an all-inclusive full-board daily rate of as little as £75 per player!
After two years at Coombe Abbey, and following mixed feedback from players, we have found a new venue which offers the best of all worlds. Woodland Grange has a rich heritage dating back to Victorian times with contemporary facilities ranging from complimentary, superfast internet access to a state-of-the-art fitness room, sauna and jacuzzi.
Although players may still pre-register for the Masters Flight, or join the Intermediate waiting list, Woodland Grange Hotel is now full on the Saturday night. However, we have secured a small allocation of rooms at the nearby Chesford Grange. See the Venue and Hotel page for more details.
Guest of Honour
We are delighted to announce that BMAB Grandmaster Mislav Kovačić from Croatia will be attending the UK Open and will be hosting a special 3-course dinner limited to 12 places (including Mislav) on the Saturday evening.
Mislav has a phenomenal international tournament record over recent years and, prior to the 2019 World Championships, he was in seventh place in the World Backgammon Rankings. His joint 6th place finish at the recent World Championships in Monte Carlo might well have improved this position! Don’t miss the opportunity to discuss the game with Mislav over dinner and get the benefit of his insights. One lucky player will be drawn to play with Mislav in the consultation doubles tournament immediately following dinner, and a second will receive an online lesson from Mislav in the form of a short match and subsequent analysis with commentary on every error and tips on how to improve further.
The cost of the dinner will be £70 for players who have already booked full-board at Woodland Grange for the Saturday night. If you live locally, or are staying elsewhere, or you have arranged a reduced B&B rate with the hotel, the cost of the dinner will be £90.
Email email@example.com to reserve your place NOW. First come, first served.
Format and Schedule
For details and timings of all events see the Format and Schedule page. Following the move to Woodland Grange, the Last Chance in both the Masters and Intermediates has been re-named “Grange Cup”. The Masters Grange Cup commences on Sunday morning and will open for players who have been eliminated from both the Undefeated and Fighters brackets. The Intermediate Grange Cup commences at about noon on Sunday.
Please note that what was in previous years called the ‘Advanced‘ flight has been renamed ‘Intermediate‘ this year for consistency with other UKBGF Tour events.
The Intermediate flight will be a qualifying Swiss on day 1, followed by Main and Consolation knockouts on day 2 (the same as the ‘Advanced’ flight last year). This flight is strictly limited to 64 players and is now full with a waiting list. See the Registration page if you wish to go on the Intermediate waiting list.
The Masters flight this year will revert to a double elimination format spread over Saturday and Sunday.
The Social Swiss comprises two separate competitions, one on Saturday and one on Sunday, intended for inexperienced or social players who are not familiar with the use of the doubling cube. Each of these competitions is expected to be completed by late afternoon on the same day.
Action begins at 1pm on Friday 30th August with 8-player satellites for Masters and Intermediate, 1-pointers, a Friday Freeroll, and Speedgammon (subject to demand) followed by the UKBGF Annual General Meeting at the provisional time of 5pm. At 6.15pm there will be a free drinks reception for all players, during which the British Backgammon Award Announcements and Presentations will be made. (Note: this was originally scheduled for the Sunday morning but it has been brought forward.)
All Registration Fees, Entry Fees, and Side Pool payments for Masters and Intermediates must be paid by 10am on Saturday 31st August, with play commencing at 11am.
On Sunday morning at 9.30am Julian Fetterlein will present another of his hugely popular seminars, provisionally titled “Backgammon Top 10”. This will be free for all players to attend – don’t miss it!
The Masters and Intermediate tournaments are expected to be completed by early evening on Sunday 1st September.
See the Registration page for details of how to register for the Masters, or be placed on the waiting list for the Intermediates which is now full with 64 players pre-registered.
This page also includes guidance on eligibility to play in a particular flight.
Masters players: please also tell us if you want to play in the Super Jackpot, starting Friday evening, which will be limited to 32 players.
If required, please also remember to book your hotel accommodation.
IMPORTANT – Masters and Intermediate players must be present at the venue with all registration and entry fees paid by 10am on Saturday 31st August 2019.
Entry and Registration Fees
Details of all Entry and Registration fees for both the Main and side events appear here. There will be no increase in registration fees this year, and they will include hot drinks and snacks throughout each day for all registered players, whether or not they are staying at Woodland Grange.
Prize Money and Added Prizes
Total return is 100% of entry fees. See Prize Money, Added Prizes and Bonuses for details of prize money allocation and added prizes from sponsors.
Lists of pre-registered players for all flights, as well as the waiting list for the Intermediate flight, can be found here. UK Open attendees from all five previous years are also listed.
We will again be streaming selected matches via our dedicated UKBGF channel
Internet speed and streaming reliability promise to be much improved at the new venue, and Máté Fehér is an acknowledged expert in this field.
