Please note below the change of format for the Advanced Flight.
For more information about eligibility to play in a particular flight, please refer to Registration
The Masters and Advanced flights will use different formats, both of which differ from last year. The Tournament Directors reserve the right to amend either of these formats if deemed necessary.
The Masters will revert to a traditional Main and Progressive Consolation format. A player losing in any round of the Main, up to and including the quarter-finals, will drop into an appropriate round of the Consolation. More play will be available for those players who have been eliminated from both the Main and the Consolation on the Saturday, and these players will be asked to confirm that they will be present on the Sunday so that they can be entered into the draw for the Abbey Cup (Last Chance).
All players will pay the basic entry fee of £100. Note that 60% of these entry fee proceeds will be paid out in the Main, 25% in the Consolation, and 15% in the Abbey Cup. If you decide not to play in the Abbey Cup you are therefore effectively forfeiting 15% of your £100 tournament entry fee. In addition to the entry fee, players may enter any one, or a maximum of two, of the optional side pools. These pools relate only to the Main; there will be separate £20 side pools in both the Consolation and Abbey Cup.
All side pool money is split 70%/30% between first and second placed players in that pool, or shared between ties as appropriate.
See Prize Money, Added Prizes and Bonuses for details of prize money distribution.
Clock and Baffle Box Rules:
Clock Obligation – this means that clocks must be used in all matches unless agreed otherwise by the Tournament Director. Please bring your own clock if you have one as we may not have sufficient. Note that the BG Buddy clock app is deemed to be an acceptable clock.
Baffle Box Option – this means that a baffle box may be used by mutual agreement in any Masters match.
Provisional Match Lengths – Masters
|Abbey Cup||5 points|
|Abbey Cup Final||7 points|
Advanced Flight (updated 5th July 2018)
The Advanced format was originally planned to be a pure Swiss competition to allow plenty of play for all. However, feedback received from players has generally been unfavourable and therefore we have decided to change from pure Swiss to the increasingly popular qualifying Swiss on day 1, followed by Main and Consolation knockouts on day 2. This format has proved to work well, and is extremely popular at the Blackpool Imperial Cup, as well as at a number of other tournaments in recent years. Mark Calderbank is the acclaimed expert at running this format and we are delighted to announce that Mark has agreed to join the UK Open team and will be in charge of running the Advanced flight. The limit on Advanced entries remains at 64 players.
The Swiss phase will therefore comprise five 7 point patches on the Saturday. The top 16 will qualify for the Main knockout and non-qualifiers will enter a Consolation knockout, both played on the Sunday. Any ties will be broken by 1-point playoffs.
A player may enter the Advanced just for the challenge, without paying any entry fee. In that case only the registration fee would be payable and the player would not be eligible to win any part of the main prize pool. However, if this player is a member of the UKBGF, he or she would still be eligible to receive an added prize from a sponsor, or other member bonus. A player must enter the optional pool of £35 to have a chance of winning a monetary prize.
Clock and Baffle Box Rules:
Option applies in both cases – this means that both players must agree to the use of a baffle box or a clock (unless imposed by a Tournament Director for scheduling or other reasons).
Provisional Match Lengths – Advanced
|Swiss qualifiers||7 points (5 matches)|
|Main knockout||7/9 points|
|Consolation knockout||5 points|
|Advanced Abbey Cup||5 points|
Beginners and Social players may request informal tuition sessions during the weekend which will be provided free, subject to a tutor being available. The seminar on Sunday morning by Backgammon Workshop is also free for everyone.
Separate Social Swiss tournaments will be organised on Saturday and on Sunday with entries closing at 11.30am on both days. These will provisionally comprise 5 rounds of 2-point matches without the use of the doubling cube.
The winner of each tournament will receive a special UKBGF doubling cube made by Geoffrey Parker Games Ltd. The winner need not be a UKBGF member to receive this prize.
A player who receives a prize on Saturday will not be eligible to win another prize on Sunday.
Provisional Match Lengths – Side Events
|Friday Warm Up||5 points|
|4-8 Player Jackpots (subject to demand)||5 points|
|Consultation Doubles||5 points|
|Super Jackpot||11 points|
Please note that, except for the Social Swiss tournaments on Saturday and Sunday, registration closes at 10am on Saturday 1st September 2018. Regardless of whether or not you have pre-registered, if you are a Masters or Advanced player you must have paid your registration fee, entry fee and any side pool money by this deadline or you will not be included in the tournament draw. If another player pays these fees on your behalf you must be present and ready to play by 11am to avoid penalty points. However if you cut things this fine you will miss the pre-tournament announcements, and the draw. Players are strongly recommended to arrive on the Friday and pay all fees then, to avoid any mishaps.
The tournament schedule is as follows. The Tournament Directors reserve the right to make changes to the program without notice as circumstances dictate. If possible, amendments or updates will be posted on the blog, and on the UKBGF Facebook page, so please follow these.
