The new UKBGF Code of Conduct (“the Code”) has value as both a guideline on the expected behaviour of players, and a statement of the UKBGF’s values and commitments towards its members and the backgammon community.
It can be found here, and on the Resources page of the website under section 3. Rules and Conduct.
Much of the Code focuses on the spirit of the game i.e. respecting rules and people. If you embody this spirit already it means the sharp end of the Code will always be something applied to other people. To paraphrase from the Code itself, its purpose is essentially to provide an effective means to deter would-be offenders, as well as a robust disciplinary procedure to deal with any misconduct that does take place, all in an effort to maintain the public image, popularity and integrity of backgammon, as well as the reputation of the UKBGF and the confidence of its members.
The Code is necessarily broad in scope covering anything from cheating or abusive behaviour at an event, to the inclusion and fair treatment of all people. Yet, while we have done our best to issue a Code that is fit for purpose, there will of course be room for improvement and as such the Code is a living document and may be amended from time to time by the UKBGF Board.
So please, acquaint yourself with the Code, take it seriously, and remember that backgammon is a game, to be enjoyed by everyone.
John McNeill (on behalf of the UKBGF Board)
