On behalf of the UKBGF as well as David Potter, Tony Lezard, and myself, a huge thanks for all your support for the UKBGF Online League, from its conception in late 2020 to today. As we have always said, this is “your” league and one to take pride in and enjoy. It is by far the largest online league in the world and now boasts nearly 400 players from all corners of the globe.
As the league’s inaugural year draws to a close, congratulations to everyone who won the coveted dice boxes kindly supplied by Katgammon.
Congratulations also to Kevin Jones for winning the P-40 Knockout, and to Gaz Owen, who was runner-up to Kev in the final and who wins an Erhan board. Once again huge thanks to Cory and his P-40 team in the USA, and to Tim Line and Özlem (Erhan869) for their continued support of all backgammon events across the globe – you are truly appreciated!
A word about league prizes for 2022: as the UKBGF dice boxes are now destined to become ever more valuable as they won’t be available next year, we have thought long and hard about how to invest in prizes. So for 2022 every league division winner, in each of the four seasons, will receive a £5 redeemable UKBGF voucher to present at any UKBGF-affiliated live event, specified UKBGF online event, or local or regional live event to be agreed in advance by the UKBGF.
You can win up to 4 vouchers worth a total of £20 if you win in all four quarters. All you will need to do is check in advance that the event you wish to enter will participate in the scheme and then present your voucher to the Tournament Director who will be paid the face value by the UKBGF to make up the balance of your registration fee.
It is hoped that this initiative will not only allow our members to benefit, but also offer support to all our Tournament Directors – those unselfishly giving of their time and often their own funds to provide for the majority, some of whom need extra support in these trying times. Tournament Directors may wish to sign up now to benefit from accepting these vouchers from players. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to apply for participation in this scheme.
The UKBGF also recently (November 2021) supported the inaugural Hub Online Championship – free to members, and with a selection of seasonal prizes from Selfridges. Congratulations to Martyn Hamer on winning the Main, defeating Danny De Meester in the final, and to Mutlu Ustun who defeated David Gallagher in the Consolation final.
Huge thanks to Alfie Kirkpatrick who with support from the UKBGF has continued to develop Backgammon Hub into a successful and ever more popular platform. Please take a look at the site and register (it’s free!) because, as you will see below, we will be partnering the Hub for several UKBGF events during 2022, and hopefully beyond.
As most of you will know, while I am a UKBGF Board member I also run Backgammon London with David Potter, which has had a very successful last year or so running The London Open, The UK Open Online (2020) on behalf of the UKBGF, and The Memorial Tournament Online – providing nearly 1,000 entrants with the largest “weekend” online events in the world with discounted entries and prizes from our sponsors, including P-40 boards, Erhan 869 Boards, Gammon Village and Golden Gammon Boards. We will continue to offer online fare through 2022 with UKBGF member benefits and discounts. A highlight for the year will be The UK National Online Championships hosted by Backgammon London and Backgammon Hub. Beyond that, a new season of the UKBGF Online League (January – March) is about to start and also a new 2022 P-40 Online knockout. We look forward to providing you with an ever-improving choice of online backgammon in 2022, but of course we sincerely hope that this will be in parallel to more live play!!
Wishing you all a Happy and Healthy 2022!!
