We have not one but two online tournaments to bring you today!
The Charity Challenge is back!
Two years ago we raised £586 for MIND. Last year we raised a super £776 for the Alzheimers’ Society. Can we beat that record? I certainly hope so and I’ve set our target for this year at an optimistic £900. Our 2018 winner Steve Waller nominated the Alzheimers’ Society for a second bite of the cherry, so let’s get behind a really worthy cause.
This year, with the experience of the Online Championships behind us, we’re going to use the multiple elimination format. Donate £5 via the tournament’s JustGiving page and you’ll start with two lives. Donate £10 and you’ll start with three. Or be really generous and for £15 you can start with five lives. Every two weeks (or when the previous round is concluded) we’ll draw you another opponent, and as long as you keep winning you keep your lives – lose a match, though, and you lose a life. Eventually we’ll end up with just our one champion who walks away with a unique trophy, the right to nominate the 2020 charity, and a warm fuzzy feeling knowing you’ve changed peoples’ lives for the better! There will be trophies for the top three finishers.
Play starts on November 11th so please make sure you get your entries in before then! The tournament is open to everyone, not just UKBGF members, and games will be played on Gridgammon by default – though players can agree to use other platforms. Julia can assist in getting a Gridgammon account if you need one, but please do ask in good time.

The WBIF World Individual Online Backgammon Championship 2020
The ultimate online tournament of the year? The WBIF championship is a 5-times elimination tournament featuring many of the world’s best, and it’s open for entries now. Entry costs €50 (plus €10 WBIF membership if you’re not already a member) and 90% of total entries will be returned as prizes. The top 7% of players will win a cash prize, and the top three will receive award certificates and trophies.
All matches will be played on the BG Studio Heroes server. If you don’t already have an account there it will be automatically created by WBIF with the nickname reported by our national contact, who is Chris Rogers. Matches will be 13 points played on a clock, with 13 minutes and 8 seconds delay. (That may appear faster than normal settings for face to face games, but don’t forget there is no delay time used up in rolling the dice!) Results and match files are reported automatically by BG Studio Heroes. Matches can be scheduled through the WBIF website. Some degree of flexibility may be required as your opponents could be in any time zone.
Entries will close on 20th February 2020 and play will start on 1st March 2020.
