The 3rd Genud Cup – more UK/USA action ahead!
Another exciting weekend of intense competition lies ahead!

This weekend, October 26-27, the UK women’s team attempts to match the achievement of their peers in the Magriel Cup nearly a fortnight ago. They go into the weekend having lost both previous encounters (the first in 2020 by a single PR point), and two defeats to the USA face to face in Stockholm as well – but the team is playing well, and PRs from the UKBGF Women’s Championship and other matches have fed through into the selection process so I believe we have the strongest online team we’ve assembled so far. Indeed, the team is playing consistently better than at our last attempt in 2022 – all the training behind the scenes is paying off – but we’re in no doubt that our counterparts have also been working very hard to polish their game, so it should be a great contest to watch.

Toon reminiscences – a merry ride
After the 43 degree in the shade of Dubai to the crisp environs of Tyneside, or more to the point Gateshead when I used to flog myself around the British League steeplechase. Pretty it wasn’t. And I only have one Great North run to my name – precisely 20 years ago – but what would the far harsher environs of the backgammon board bring; where you can train as hard as you like, and still finish stone bonkers last? Do I miss the clinical returns you get from running – where you will come where you’re supposed to? No, not really. Because I was never gonna’ win the Great North. I went into it knowing the jeopardy of my existence was 25th-30th of the 40,000-odd runners. And so it went:

2025 Scottish Open Announced

Registration is now open for the 2025 Scottish Open.
The Open, hosted by Aberdeen Backgammon Club, will be held from Friday May 2 to Sunday May 4 2025 at the Holiday Inn, Westhill, Aberdeen – the same location as this year’s event. The tournament is limited to 64 players.
And it will be part of the UKBGF Tour, with UKBGF members able to earn tour points and a place at the Invitational Tour event.
Main Ratings List restored for non-members
As part of a review of members’ benefits, we recently made a change to the main ratings lists, restricting them to UKBGF members only. An unintended consequence has been to create a difficulty for club and tournament organisers who can no longer easily look up non-members’ ratings. Organisers need to be able to do this since entry to some events is dependent on a player’s national rating. We have also listened to feedback from members, TDs, and a discussion on the AO Forum. In light of this, the UKBGF has decided to reverse this change, and as from 17th October, non-members’ playing history will once again appear in the main ratings lists. Players are reassured that match results and ratings have been updated throughout this change-over, and records of match history are unaffected. Non-members will therefore appear in the ratings lists as if there had been no change.
UKBGF ratings are clearly valued by the backgammon community. The development and maintenance of this and other resources is only possible with the support of subscribing members. Details of how to join UKBGF, and the associated benefits of membership can be found here.
