The UK Backgammon Federation
This proposed new series for the UKBGF claims three ‘victims’ per edition, of an intended wide variety of scope, ability, age and gender, to describe their journey through the game and to address the thematic question of how and why backgammon is such a “mental health marvel”.
For our first trio we have a rose between two thorns, in Rachel Rhodes [RR], Ian Gwynne [IG] and “The Rake” – Raymond Kershaw [RK]. My thanks to them for their fascinating insights.
Picture this: it’s 1999, and I’m at my favourite local casino, utterly engrossed in my usual blackjack routine. I’m juggling two hands like a pro, but tonight, the cards seem to be having a bit of a laugh at my expense. For instance, I get a ‘Queen’ and a ‘Six’ for my first card on each hand, and then a ‘Four’ and a ‘King’ for the second. So, one hand totals 14 and the other 16. “If only the ‘Four’ and the ‘Queen’ had swapped places,” I muttered to myself, “I’d be sitting pretty with a 20 and a 10!”
That night, a light bulb went off: why not create a game where you can actually switch cards around? And thus, ‘Blackjack Switch’ was born, spreading its charm to casinos worldwide!
Voting is now open to all UKBGF members in the elections to form the UKBGF Board for the two year period 2025-6. You will need to vote before midnight on Sunday 13th October 2024, and in order to vote you will need to specify the email account you used to register with the UKBGF. It’s nearly a month since the fifth running of the Brighton Summer Open (BSO). August has been such a busy month for me, with the Whatcote invitational, a road trip and the UK Open packed in, so I have been lax with admin. All results have now been added.
Attendance at the event was affected by the full calendar of events, including the world doubles in Aachen which saw a number of international players unable to attend. We still managed to attract 71 players including a still impressive 10 internationals. There were some at the time who said let’s combine them into one flight, but No! This event has and always will be two flights (plus beginners if we get them).
