UK Online League and Cup – Third Quarter Update

During the Covid period, when backgammon offerings to the members were clearly in short supply, the UKBGF took the bold decision to support BackgammonLondon in an ambitious initiative to take the flagship UK event – The UK Open – and create an online event for its members over the August 2020 Bank Holiday weekend.

The event was a clear success, attracting over 300 players and sponsored prizes from P-40. Following on from this success, in December 2020 BackgammonLondon presented to the Board their more daring initiative of a UK Online League and Cup for the members.

One of these (minus the dice!) goes to every division winner each quarter!

WBGF World Team Championships, Trier 2021: Sweet Caroline All Over Again

A lovely sunny day in Karl Marx’s garden.

Multiple flight cancellations, endless Covid bureaucracy, risk of quarantine, player withdrawals, rescheduling of flights to a different and more distant airport, uncertainty as to whether the event would take place at all. These were among the challenges the UK team faced heading into the delayed event which took place from 30th August to 1st September in the German town of Trier, famed as the birthplace of Karl Marx.

The UK Women’s team take on Japan

After the outstanding performances of Team UK in taking the silver medal at the World Team Championship (on which subject, stay tuned for a subsequent post!), the Women’s team have their next outing online this weekend and are hoping to end a run of losing to other teams by the smallest possible margin each time!
