The UK Backgammon Federation
It was a room full of larger than life characters but Mike Main stood out immediately. He was standing at the bar of the Fox Reformed Club, a pint of beer in hand and wearing his trademark monk’s habit. “That’s Mike Mad Monk” someone told me. He certainly looked the part.
That was over 20 years ago. It is hard to comprehend that Mike isn’t with us anymore.
On Saturday 8th of April, the bunnies congregated at the Royal British Legion Club in Cornmeadow Lane, Worcester. The new home of Worcester Backgammon Club has now hosted several tournaments and for this we are grateful. The Turkey, Intermediate, Turkey Earthquake Appeal and now the Bunny Bash (NB. “Bash” in no way suggests cruelty to rabbits, but refers to a party!) Apologies for the ‘woke’ statement!
The UKBGF Board are delighted to confirm the UK’s most prestigious event is open for registration. And remember also to book your accommodation at Woodland Grange.
Huge thanks are due to Steve Lee and his team for stepping in last year and creating such a wonderful community spirit and a well-run event. This year the UKBGF Board have decided to take the lead and any surplus funds generated by the UK Open will either be ploughed back into the event itself or invested in other member benefits.
The Loutraki Grand Prix represented the fulfilment of the late Giorgos Kleitsas’s dream to organise the first major tournament on the mainland of Greece since 1994 in conjunction with Arda Findikoglu. Sadly, Giorgos passed away in tragic circumstances in 2019, so it was left to Stefanos Haraklias, Arda and his team to run the event in his memory.
It’s not every day you get the chance to combine all three of your favourite hobbies but the Brazilian Open over the past 5 years has allowed me to combine running, speaking Portuguese and of course the reason I’m writing backgammon. As more people are now asking me about the tournament, travel, hotels and visiting Brazil in general I’d thought I’d write a short blog to give you all a flavour of the tournament.
