With live play still very much off the agenda right now, at least in the UK, we’re pleased to pass on news of another development online – the first Youth World Championship. Indeed, the UKBGF are one of the sponsors of the event, and we’d be delighted to see a good turnout of young British players.
The tournament is being organised through the WBIF platform wbif.net and all games will be played on Backgammon Studio Heroes – this has the advantage that results are automatically reported and match files are submitted for analysis immediately on games finishing. The format is seven rounds of 9-point matches in Swiss format, with the top sixteen then going forward to a final knockout for the title. This guarantees plenty of chances to play and a couple of unlucky defeats early on doesn’t put you straight out. Players need to be under 26 to take part, and there are prizes both for the eventual winners and also the best performances in the under-26, under-18, under-16 and under-14 age groups.
It’s free to register on Heroes and the tournament itself is free too – you need to be registered by the 26th June and play will start at the beginning of July. Find out more and register here. We already have a real-life junior world champion in our ranks, so why not have a go? (And don’t forget, under-21 and student UKBGF membership is also free… )
