Backgammon players may be well accustomed to travelling in order to take part in tournaments, but next Thursday sees the start of the first tournament where clocking up the miles is actually part of the fun: BikeGammon.

The tournament, organised by Simon Hopper (the motorcycling) and Richard Biddle (the backgammon) takes place over a leisurely five day tour of northern France and Belgium, enjoying the scenic routes, local hostelries and a bit of sightseeing from Folkestone to Escalles, Rouen, Valenciennes and Ghent before heading home. The evenings will allow for a round of five-pointers on night one, followed by three nights of seventeen-pointers.
With three players taking part, the format is also an unusual one – each player taking turns to face the other two as a consulting pair, with a win for the singleton being worth double. Far better than sitting out part of the time!
