A small group of Brits and Irish headed to Malta in search of some backgammon and winter sunshine. We weren’t disappointed, as the island has so much to offer with its rich history and attractions. The event was staged at the Penthouse of the splendid Cavalieri Art hotel, with fantastic views over St Julian’s Bay.

Malta Backgammon hosted the WBIF Tour Finals comprised of qualifiers who had won the most matches from WBIF online tournaments. This prestigious 32-player live event was won by Fernando Neumark (Argentina), with Eva Zizkova (Czech Republic) taking second place.

The WBIF event was followed by the Malta Open, capably run by an enthusiastic team lead by Claus Elken. A field of 70 battled it out in this double-elimination event, with Sauli Alho (Finland) winning the event, and Bakar Matikashvili (Georgia) finishing runner-up.
