Dons Dominate First Scotland Women’s Tournament

It was a top performance by the Aberdeen Backgammon Club as they secured the top two places in the inaugural Scotland Women’s Tournament.

Thirteen players from across the country – Inverness, Aberdeen, Dundee, Stirling, Ayr and Edinburgh – gathered at the Victoria Bar in Leith, Edinburgh at the end of August.

Brenda Rafferty (pictured right) went undefeated in the four-round, 7-point match tournament, with Anita Martin coming second on points difference. The event was hosted by Karen Slawek (left) who runs the Edinburgh Club and is the recently-appointed captain of the Scottish women’s team.

2025 Scottish Open Announced

Registration is now open for the 2025 Scottish Open.

The Open, hosted by Aberdeen Backgammon Club, will be held from Friday May 2 to Sunday May 4 2025 at the Holiday Inn, Westhill, Aberdeen – the same location as this year’s event.  The tournament is limited to 64 players.

And it will be part of the UKBGF Tour, with UKBGF members able to earn tour points and a place at the Invitational Tour event.

Ireland victorious in Scotland

Mike Ireland was crowned as the winner of the Scottish Open – the first champion for 12 years.

Fifty two players took part in the tournament at the Holiday Inn in Aberdeen, a tournament that was last held more than a decade ago.  Participants travelled from across the British Isles to take part.

Brenda Rafferty, one of the members of the organising committee, said: “We hope everyone had a great weekend of backgammon.

“We’re very grateful to all the people who came to the event and a special thank you to all of my colleagues – in particular treasurer Ian Cukrowski and TD Graeme McPhee – who did such a lot of work in the year before the event.”

Scottish Open: Update

The 2024 Scottish Backgammon Open is just a couple of weeks away and there are still a few places left.
We now have our trophy. Who will be the first to be crowned Scottish champion in more than 12 years? The trophy is too heavy to travel, however Nessie and the winning slate coaster will go home with the champion along with the winner’s £1000 prize money.
