Dear fellow backgammon players,
As some of you may know I have been developing an iOS helper app for backgammon called BG Buddy. I’m now at the stage where I’d like to offer more people the chance to beta test BG Buddy free of charge. If you’d like to try BG Buddy beta all you need is an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch that runs iOS 8 or later.
The Merit Open tournament in Cyprus is only in its third year, but is already one of the largest tournaments in Europe. We had a very strong British contingent playing this time – no doubt attracted by some very serious prizes including €54,000 for the main winner. You may have seen tweets lamenting the Britons going out of the main tournament, but under the radar Gaz Owen (Bristol) was steadily making his way through the fighters bracket…
OK, so Halloween is barely over but we’re already looking forward to a backgammoning Christmas, and what better way to work off the excess turkey with a good tournament?
Worcester Backgammon Club are planning the Turkey Leftovers Tourney, a rather informal fun backgammon event over Christmas. Limited to 32 players, it’s only £10, with £2 going to a very worthy charity, Help Harry Help Others… www.hhho.org.uk. The remainder will 100% be used for prizes. There may also be a couple of side pools as well depending on interest. There will be a sponsored Charity Advent Calendar as well – and seasonal music will be entertaining annoying everyone all day!

Report on Backgammon Masters Series UK Ranking Tournament #5, 24th and 25th October 2015
I was very reluctant to attend one of these tournaments. The use of the word “Masters” was discouraging – I am not a Master. I haven’t been studying the game for some time, whereas I have noticed others are recording full matches or photographing lots of positions for later analysis. Recently, I have been playing with an error rating of around 8 on GridGammon. In the last ranking tournament, Julian Fetterlein played at 3.01 and a few others played at under 4. Around 20 years ago, I won a few tournaments, so my reputation is far higher than my standard of play. Entering a tournament like this would cruelly expose me for the intermediate level player that I am.
