New club challenge ends with Wanstead win

Last month Wanstead Backgammon Society (WBGS) welcomed East Kent Backgammon Club (EKBGC) to the Clissold Arms in North London for an inaugural club challenge.

Ten players from each club took part, with every player competing in five seven-point matches throughout the day. With 50 matches played in total, the competition proved to be a closely fought contest from start to finish.

In the end, Wanstead Backgammon Society secured victory and lifted the trophy by the narrowest of margins, winning 26–24.

However, the result was only part of what made the day so successful. The competition was played in a warm and friendly atmosphere, with players from both clubs enjoying some excellent backgammon and a thoroughly enjoyable day together. New friendships were formed and, perhaps most importantly, a strong bond was forged between the two clubs.

Such was the success of the event that both clubs agreed to make every effort to establish the WBGS–EKBGC Challenge as an annual fixture, giving players the opportunity to renew the competition and friendships in the years ahead.

A special thank you from both clubs goes to Ferri Dehmobedi of WBGS and Sean Thomas (Tournament Director) of EKBGC for their work in organising the event.

Finally, our thanks go to all the players from East Kent Backgammon Club for making the journey to London and helping to make the day such a memorable and enjoyable occasion.
