It was at the start of the year that I took over from Tim Cross as the UK online team captain. These were considerable boots to fill given he had just helped steer the squad of himself, Seb Wilkinson, Gaz Owen, Leo Waters and myself to the title of EBIF online team champions in 2017.
Team UK: the World Team Championship squad

The UK backgammon team for the most prestigious team event of 2018, the World team Championship in Gibraltar has been selected and is as follows:
- Eric McAlpine
- Gaz Owen
- Lawrence Powell
- Peter Bennet
- Raj Jansari
- Sebastian Wilkinson
- Steve Bibby
- Tim Cross (Captain)
As by far and away the most successful international backgammon team for the last 30 months we are undoubtably now on the hit list of the major World backgammon powers, so it is great that we are taking such a strong team.
Both Steve Bibby (UK Open and UKBGF tour winner) and Peter Bennet (wins in Bristol and Worcester as well as being the UK number one rated player) have forced their way into the team and will be welcomed by the regulars.
The international team set up is far from a closed shop – so if you can play around PR 5 or better and you are interested in representing the teams, please come and chat and I will explain some of the criteria I consider when selecting the team.
Team UK triumph again – this time at the Nordic Open
Team UK – for this event, Lawrence Powell, Tim Cross, Raj Jansari, Sebastian Wilkinson and Eric McAlpine – continued its drive towards domination of the international backgammon scene with another superb performance at the Nordic Open team event, winning the double-elimination tournament outright and undefeated!

Team UK’s End of Year report – 2017
