Grosvenor Tour Dates Announced

In addition to the Brighton qualifier already announced to take place on Saturday 18th January, two further dates have been confirmed for qualifiers at the London Victoria casino: Saturday 22nd February (see Facebook event) and Saturday 31st May. See the UK Open Qualifiers page for the full Grosvenor Tour which will be updated as qualifier dates are confirmed.

For the Qualifiers in Brighton and London registration will open at 11am. Players are advised to arrive by 11.30am as registration will close at 11.45am, followed by the draw, with play starting at noon.

Missing piece puzzle

Backgammon sometimes seems like a giant jigsaw puzzle: there are multiple pieces of seemingly unrelated information but, very rarely, we find a way to join the pieces together and the big picture becomes clearer.

The First Piece…

Suppose you are four points behind in a long match. If you have to win four games at one point to equal the score, the chance of this happening is 1/16. If each game is worth two points you only need to win two games and your chance is one quarter. If each game is worth four points your chance is a half. This is to show what may be obvious to some – that the trailer wants each game to be worth more points.

Brighton Grosvenor to host first UK Open Qualifier

We’re pleased to announce that the first Grosvenor qualifier for the 2014 UK Open will be held on Saturday 18th January at the Grosvenor G Casino in Brighton. View the event on Facebook here.

For just £10, each player has a chance to win a £250 seat in the Championship Flight of the 2014 UK Open, with no minimum attendance threshold.  Voluntary side pools will also be available offering 100% return to players, and a free buffet lunch will be served after the first round of play.  Details of the format of Grosvenor qualifiers can be found on the UK Open Qualifiers page.

John Riley, Gaming Services Manager of the Brighton G Casino, is pleased that the first stop on the UKBGF Grosvenor Backgammon Tour will be in Brighton and said, “We are delighted to be hosting this event, and are sure it will be a success.”

A further seven qualifiers are planned for the remainder of the Tour, including two each at the Victoria London, and the G Casino Didsbury, Manchester.  The full Tour programme will be announced soon.

Bear Off Cube Action: Seminar by Mochy

Masayuki Mochizuki (Mochy), perhaps the strongest backgammon player in the world, has kindly invited us to reproduce his recent bear off seminar here on the UKBGF blog. Mochy gave this presentation over the weekend at the Merit Open 2013 in Cyprus, and it is our pleasure to share it here with our readers.
