Registration for 2026 Newcastle Open

Registration is open for this year’s Newcastle Open which runs from October 9-11.

The tournament, organised by the North East Backgammon Association, is part of the UKBGF Tour and is open to 80 players. It will be held at the usual venue: the Masonic Hall in Gateshead, with a registration fee of £40 and entry fee of £50.

There will be a free Friday warm-up followed by the main tournament on the Saturday and Sunday, with consolation and last chance events, along with a doubles tournament on Saturday night.

World tournaments come to London

Three of the world’s biggest backgammon tournaments come to London in the summer.

The World Team, the World Women’s Team and the World Individual championships will be held at the Mercure Hotel at Earl’s Court from August 24-30.

It’s the first time that the UK has hosted these events and it will be the biggest backgammon event ever to be held in the country.

More on all things Zigi later, but first we must raise a toast to the convivial, family atmosphere that was the English Riviera Congress, brilliantly run by Plamen Sivrev.  Yes, Saturday’s play was discombobulated in parts, and a few were deprived their dinner and had to play reduced matches, but all was well in the end, and Sunday ran clean as a whistle, finishing at 1753hrs, ample time for your lithe reporter to scamper a kilometre for the 1800 to Paddington. Pete winner of second Newcastle Intermediates tournament

Pete Cain walked away with the winner’s trophy at the second Newcastle Intermediates tournament at the weekend. Along with the prize money, Pete also won a place at the Tour Winners Invitational early next year after defeating Fraya Dravern in the final.
Meanwhile, Pat Brooks won the Lindisfarne Trophy in the consolation event beating George Kyriazi, while the Hadrian Trophy went to Sean Broadie in the last chance event, with Derek Murphy the runner-up.
Denby Pettitt won the Alan Masters travel board and Mark Baker the Friday night freeroll, while the doubles event was won by Ruth Flack and Keith Gill.
As runner-up in the main event, Fraya wins a place in the Newcastle Open later this year.
