Alex Polden has been crowned the new UK champion at the 11th UK Open. Alex defeated Csaba Daday in the final in a field of 94 entrants in the Masters flight.
Dons Dominate First Scotland Women’s Tournament
It was a top performance by the Aberdeen Backgammon Club as they secured the top two places in the inaugural Scotland Women’s Tournament.
Thirteen players from across the country – Inverness, Aberdeen, Dundee, Stirling, Ayr and Edinburgh – gathered at the Victoria Bar in Leith, Edinburgh at the end of August.
Brenda Rafferty (pictured right) went undefeated in the four-round, 7-point match tournament, with Anita Martin coming second on points difference. The event was hosted by Karen Slawek (left) who runs the Edinburgh Club and is the recently-appointed captain of the Scottish women’s team.

Last week, the UKBGF blog published my article ‘Part 1: My Yearly Pilgrimage to the Mecca of our game’. There I laid out the logic for upholding our traditions as a community by keeping the World Championships of Backgammon in Monaco and coalescing around a consistent format with an ever-increasing prize pool, so as to gain sponsors, media coverage, new players, and prestige. I also warned of the dangers of changing the diet of the goose that lays the golden eggs.

UK to host the WBGF World Teams Championship 2026 alongside the 30th Mind Sports Olympiad
Following presentations and a vote of the member nations at the WBGF Extraordinary General Assembly on 6th October 2024, the UK was invited to host the 2026 WBGF World Team Championship and Women’s World Team Championship. This event and the subsequent individual event will be held at the Mercure Earls Court hotel in London from 24th to 30th August 2026.
