Serban Murgu is the champion of the inaugural Worcestershire Open, beating Radu Ciortan in an all-Romanian and dramatic final.
That was followed by fellow Romania Aniel Ciobanu winning the Rose Hill Trophy – the consolation event – in the final against Neil Young. Meanwhile Andrew Darby triumphed in the Lickey End last chance event, with Hazel Harper the runner-up.
And the doubles trophies went to Alex Hannam and Mike Snowdon, defeating Rowena and Stefan Paliwoda in the Saturday night final.
There’s already been a lot of great coverage from the Monte Carlo Open, the UBC Final between Zdenek Zizka and Thomas Myhr, and the start of the main event in Monte Carlo. Particular congratulations to Paul and Miranda Moulton for reaching the semi-finals of the Doubles in a massive field of 118 pairs, and our best wishes go out to all UK players in Monaco right now. However, not everyone is so lucky…
In a record-breaking weekend, Brighton A (Mike Grabsky, Paul Statter, Chris Jones, Dan Rovira and Jude le Patourel) are the new club champions of the UK. The team defeated Manchester (pictured below) in the final of the Main Event at the University of York.
The turn-out for the weekend was a record for the clubs championship: 94 players took part in the Saturday individual warm-up event, while there were 155 players representing 31 teams from 20 clubs – from Aberdeen to Brighton – for the main championship.
Matches underway and boot camp sold out
The UKBGF’s new Intermediate Development League is now in full swing, with Round 1 matches already producing some exciting backgammon and excellent learning opportunities.
Our 12 teams—each pairing a Grandmaster or Master with an intermediate player—have now kicked off their campaigns. The opening matches were played on Backgammon Heroes under tournament conditions and some test recordings were made. We hope that from this round moving forward we will be able to provide recordings of several matches and also to allow observers to listen to the discussion.
