A New Era for UK Backgammon: The Intermediate Development League Launches

The UK Open Consulting Doubles 2024

Over 80 players applied to be part of the UKBGF’s exciting new Intermediate Development League, and after a random draw – with two places reserved for nominees from the Women’s National Squad – 12 players have now been paired with some of the country’s leading Grandmasters and Masters. The league has officially launched, and we’re excited to announce the full list of teams along with the first round of fixtures for the 2025 season.

Matches will be played online on Backgammon Studio Heroes in the Tournament Room “UKBGF Doubles” as 7-point matches, with a 21-minute clock and a 15-second delay.

The rise of the rookies

It was a weekend for the rookies at the 2025 Scottish Backgammon Open in  Aberdeen.

Graeme Leslie, a local loon,  triumphed to win the trophy at only his second tournament, beating another tournament rookie James Ferguson in the final. In a stand-out weekend, James also went on to win the Doubles event, along with the other half of the Edinburgh duo, Matthew Hopkins.

And, to make it a hat-trick of victories for tournament newcomers, Sandy Ferguson, Ayr Club, completed a double success – winning the Consolation and the Friday Night Warm Up.

Irish eyes are smiling at World Teams

This year the Backgammon World Team Championship was held in Kamena Vourla Greece with 25 teams in the Open section and 15 teams in the Ladies’ competition. The teams competition was followed by the individual Greek Grand Prix competition which meant that there was plenty backgammon for everyone.

Ireland was delighted to participate in the Open section with a panel of six players available to field a team of five, which meant that everyone got to play lots of matches. The team was Sean Casey (captain), Daniel Lynch, Sean Jones, Moore Wisener, Graham Dungan and Micky Fernandez.

A big thank you to the Backgammon Federation who sponsored the team T-shirt.
